A 20 minute pose from last night’s figure drawing session.
A group of sketchers met at the Oakland cemetery in Atlanta for Sketchcrawl 42. It was a cold day even though the sun was shining. I managed to do a quick watercolor and pencil sketch of a tomb before a few of us retreated to a cafe to warm up and sketch indoors where I pulled out my ipad and did a quick study of a coffee cup using Artrage.
Here is a quick sketch I did last month while traveling in Rome. It was lovely to sit down, rest tired tourist legs and enjoy an ‘americano’ and sketch away.
The 41st international sketchcrawl was this Saturday. This time we met at the campus of Emory university. I brought my oils and set up to paint in the picturesque quad. There was light rain falling and I was joined by one other sketcher.
I was fortunate enough to go to the Massive Black/ AAU event in San Francisco this year. I saw some old friends and met new ones, and saw some super inspiring stuff. These are sketches I did on my DS while out there. One is from a figure painting session with Karl Kopinski, the other is from a Alla Prima head painting session with Coro, and the third is a super quick study of a fellow BART rider.
Today I went out to participate in a sketchcrawl in my new hood in Decatur GA. I Only had pencils and a tiny sketchbook plus my trusty Nintendo DS since most of mygear is in a container somewhere. I did one sketch of a church in blue col- erase pencil. Then i found a dark spot under a big tree amd sketched my friends and fellow sketchcrawlers Will and his wife Anna on my Nintendo. The last few minutes were spent doing quick studies of random people in Decatur square. A fun day out.
In figure drawing class the other day, I loved how the bright red drapery was reflecting red into the shadows, something you cannot capture with black charcoal. Luckily I had brought my good old, Nintendo DS in and was able to make this attempt at capturing it. 🙂
Over the summer I was commissioned by an advertising agency to do a series of illustrations for an energy company in Iceland. The ads were used online, in newspaper ads and billboards at the Keflavik airport. When traveling the other day I came upon one of the billboards. It is always nice to see ones work printed large.
Couple of more figure drawings. Got into a new group that meets once a week in the summer.
I was able to do more outdoor painting this weekend. This is a wooded grassy hill in the Elliðaár valley in Reykjavík.
Here are 2 more boat sketches done in the summer on my lunch break. One is a little rusty fishing boat and the other is the Octopus, Paul Allen’s super yacht. Both are watercolor with white gouache.
Here is a quick DS sketch from life, had to stop when the sitter changed position.
My wonderful workplace sent me to attend MADE workshop in Berlin. It is workshops and lectures on concept art, comics and fine art, organized in collaboration with Sixmorevodka studios and Massive Black. It was great fun to meet tons of creative and talented artists and do a few sketches.
I took my travel gouache paint set with me when I travelled to Costa Rica and Mexico recently. Here are a couple of small sketches that I did where I stayed at a rural wellness center in the mountains. There are also two DS sketches from the same trip.
I had an interesting experience last weekend when sitting in an airplane ready to take off from Boston, the captain came on and gave us the news that a volcano just erupted in Iceland and therefore we could not risk taking the journey back to Iceland. This led to even more time hanging around airports, but luckily with my trusty DS I passed the time painting fellow travellers and surroundings in the airport.
My awesome workplace is offering figure drawing sessions once a week. I’ve been enjoying working with charcoal and one time i took out the DS for some fast color sketching. Here are a few…
Two quick Nintendo DS sketches, the first out my bedroom window the other out the office window that overlooks Reykjavik Harbour
Went downtown armed with a sketchpad and my DS on the 5th anniversary of the first SketchCrawl. Was pretty cold so I ended up finding a seat at the cafe in City Hall which overlooks the duck pond. After drawing the bridge in pencil and sketching a duck, the twilight had really set in and I was compelled to capture it in color. So out came my DS knowing I only had 5 minutes before I had to go, this was the result.
Painted from life on my trusty DS. It is nice at night you don´t have to worry about the light changing… but it was a bit cold, and I had to stop when drops of rain fell on my screen.
