Making Black Walnut Ink

  • January 21, 2020January 21, 2020

A couple of years ago I noticed the abundance of black walnuts that fell in my back yard. As I filled a wheelbarrow to compost the nuts, I remember feeling it was wasteful and wished I could use them. Later I came across an article on how to make your own Black Walnut Ink. The following fall the trees did not produce much fruit, but this fall I had an abundant harvest and an opportunity to try my hand at making ink.

Collecting the walnuts. The green husks turn black with time.
When the nuts have all turned black, I put them in a pot and covered with water.
First boil – before the husks are separated from the nuts.
The husks strained through a piece of fabric.
Second boil – to reduce the strained liquid to a desired shade of brown.

The finished product with a custom label.
My neighbor commissioned me to do a drawing of their house and it was the perfect opportunity to give my new ink a try.
